The University of Utah Hospital in Salt Lake City, Utah is searching for a Health Information Coder II.

As a Coder II, you will be responsible for abstracting, coding and sequencing the classification of medical and surgical procedures, diagnosis and treatment modalities on Inpatient and Day Surgery records.
-Select the most accurate and descriptive codes from the listings of International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision, Clinical Modification, (ICD-9-CM) American Medical Association Current Procedural Terminology (CPT-4) Coding system, and Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS).
-Assign DRGs and perform coding compliance reviews.
-The Coder II extracts pertinent data from the patient’s health record, and determines appropriate coding for reports/billing documents and identifies codes for reporting medical services and procedures performed by physicians.
-Perform routine audits independently and participates in quality assurance and performance improvements.
Candidate Qualifications:
The successful candidate must be organized and able to lead a team as well as prioritize assignments. We are seeking an excellent communicator that can work with all levels of the organization and be supportive of management. The Coder II will work to educate professional and physician staff regarding changes in coding methodologies. Long term goals include optimizing reimbursement for the Center.
Candidate will have at least one of the following:
Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), or Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT).
-An Associate’s degree in a related area is required with at least 3 - 4 years ongoing inpatient coding and abstracting experience in ICD-9-CM, DRGs, and CPT/HCPCS, including modifiers and APCs.

Position Summary
The successful candidate assures timely response and follow-up to action items generated via CHW and Internal Audits.
-Assures timely responses to Medicare transmittals and other coding compliance issues.
-Conducts monthly documentation review audits and prepares report for the Ongoing Documentation Record Review Committee, and appropriate medical staff departments.
-Monitors progress with System and HIM/Coding benchmarks and takes corrective action as necessary to ensure adherence and achievement of metrics.
-Assists the Director of HIM in assuring compliance with hospital policies, HIPAA, Title XXII, Joint Commission, and Medicare Conditions of Participation.

-Assists the Director of HIM in completion of performance evaluations and in training, orienting and monitoring HIM staff.
-In the absence of the Director, assumes responsibility for the department and performs related duties.
-Other duties as assigned.
Candidate Qualifications:
-RHIT and CCS credential preferred.
-Required CCS and RHIT eligible with receipt of credential within 6 months of hiring.
-One year of management experience with demonstrated organizational and and leadership skills.
-Working knowledge of current requirements/regulations governing health information management.

Medical Learning, Inc. (MedLearn) is searching for a Senior Travel HIM Healthcare Consultant to join our team.
Medical Learning, Inc. (MedLearn) seeks to add to its team a Senior Travel HIM Healthcare Consultant who will report to the Vice President of Consulting Services. This position may be full-time, part-time or contract. There is no need for relocation, but travel up to 85% is required.
MedLearn is a nationally recognized consulting, publications, and training company that specializes in providing coding, reimbursement, compliance and educational services for hospitals, physicians and other healthcare organizations.
Position Responsibilities:
The Senior HIM Consultant is responsible for performing on and off-site coding audits for inpatient and-or outpatient services. Additional audits related to RACs, PERMs, CERTs, etc. may also be performed as well as Clinical Documentation Improvement (CDI) Projects. This position will also require providing coding education to various groups such as coders, billers, nurses, physicians, etc.
Key responsibilities for this position may include (but are not limited to):
Medical record chart / bill / UB-04 / remittance advice reviews
Physician, Nurse, Coder, and Billing staff education
MS-DRG and / or APC reviews (to include but not limited to inpatient, outpatient surgery, emergency department, infusion, hospital-based clinics)
RAC, PERM, CERT, etc reviews to validate coding and documentation issues
Implementation of CDI Programs
Participation in hospital revenue cycle assessments and process improvement engagements
Other various compliance engagements as defined
Prepare appropriate written report to include findings and recommendations
Calculate accuracy rates and financial impact
Document audit finding in Excel spreadsheets and use a variety of software tools effectively
Present information and respond to questions from clients
Support and work with sales staff to identify additional consulting work
Assistance with MedLearn publications such as creating new publications, updating current publications, writing newsletter articles or “Compliance Questions” of the week as assigned
Respond to various client and coding questions as assigned
Provide various speaking engagements for associations, groups, etc.
Candidate Experience and Education Qualifications:
In-depth technical knowledge of ICD-9-CM, CPT coding conventions, DRG and APC assignment, medical terminology and anatomy
Advanced knowledge of coding / documentation and billing regulations related to commercial insurance, Medicaid and Medicare
Maintains knowledge of coding and billing requirements and regulatory changes and acts as a resource to colleagues and clients
Maintains a 95% or higher coding accuracy rate
Minimum of 5-7 years of experience working in a hospital as a coder.
BA or BS degree in respective specialty area preferred
One of the following credentials required:
RHIA, RHIT, CCS, CPC or LPN.
Following Personal Aptitudes highly desirable:
-Strong written and verbal communication skills.
-Analytical ability to gather and interpret data, to evaluate reports and track progress and to determine methods for ensuring compliance.
-Self-confident and at ease in presenting to groups of 20-30 people, and in communicating to Senior Management of hospitals (CEO, COO, and CFO).
-High degree of interpersonal skills to effectively communicate with physicians, physician assistants, residents, nurses, management, coding and billing staff, etc. .
-“Self-starter” – ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
-Computer skills for organizing and displaying data, accessing various internal applications and external resources via the internet.
-Software program knowledge should include: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Microsoft Office, various Encoders/Groupers.
